The website is coming along well, i have the actionscript all working and the layout set, just waiting for the content and it'll be go go go!
In the meantime, Embrace the Culture and I agreed that i should perhaps market myself a little more, since my website is empty and i dont market myself in any form.
As a result we have been brainstorming ideas and Ryan sent over a design he'd been working on, merged with my idea of using a Blue Jay in my name in some form to tie in with my initials.

The end results have been as such:

This is tied in with a new blog design and a new website on the way. I shall write about it now and then post it afterwards.
I struggled with the virtual environments pathway, learning to use the software was a huge learning curve that i never really got round. I did extensive research into a wide range of media, i looked at comics, tv cartoons, tv drama, games and films to influence my designs and although the work is weak, i feel you can see my intentions within it. My biggest influence was the sinister layouts of map design in the game Team fortress 2, while also looking at the set design for Torchwood. My lair was to be a sinister alter ego of myself, and set in an underground bunker, and so that is where my decisions to base my ideas on them came from. Effectively i have practiced all areas that were expected of me. I have modelled, i have textured i have used lighting and i have shown an understanding of the cameras. I dont feel that i could have made a better job, it was my first time and i struggled immensely despite putting a lot of hours into it. As stated, my intentions were to create a lair to suit a sinister alter ego of myself. I wanted to create a "dr strangelove style" war room, an innocent looking waiting room, a hospital bay and a garage for my car. I was able to model the layouts for the rooms quite well and i feel for that the garage and medical wing worked well. But i struggled with modelling furniture and i was unable to scale things down having made them.
I am pleased that i managed to deliver something. I am disappointed with the outcome, but i did put a lot of effort into it. I wont be taking it as a pathway, ive known all along.

Interactive Quiz, Final Edit.

Interactive Quiz Final Edit by ~loveremains on deviantART

This is the final draft of my Interactive Quiz.
I am relatively pleased with the outcome, but had to make quite a few adaptions from my initial plans.
Initially i wanted to present my quiz more as a game show and have every question filmed with me asking it. By doing so it bridged the gap between television game show and internet quizzes which seem quite devoid of excitement. This soon became clear that it was a tough task due to the ammount of memory needed simply filming it. However it is something i am going to attempt over the summer.
For this project however i then decided to change direction. I stuck to the same topic which meant that i just arrange my layout and its design. I decided to base my questions on the history of art and design, an area i felt was quite diverse but something i that interests me and hopefully most people would know at least a couple of the questions. This also meant that by using a subject that was mostly images, i could then have image based answers, rather than just text, which i felt was far more interesting.
My design of the interface was subsequently influenced by the subject, so i chose to use the style of the swiss typographers such as Armin Hofmann while using the image of "lilya brik" by Alexander Rodchenko, a Russian constructivist.
I struggled on the previous flash project as it was the first time id ever used it, however this time i was more comfortable with the software and had longer to execute this project and so feel i have produced something i am personally far more happy with.
I have been able to include multiple sounds, video and animation and show an understanding of how Flash works. As a result i am quite happy with the outcome.

Moving Image project final outcome;

Please find above the final outcome of our group moving image project, "Cough".
I am pleased with the outcome, considering i was extremely worried how it would turn out initially.
I think that above all what is most pleasing is that what we set out to do actually happened.
Having read the script we interpreted it as a bit of a domestic drama. As a result our instant influences were the likes of Desperate Housewives and the Stepford Wives, etc. However having researched further into our own areas, mine being Camera Operator. We were able to find other strong influences. My choice of composition for the camera was heavily influenced by American Beauty and Citizen Kane, both of which had very similar scenes to the one we had planned out.
This meant we also had a strong list of influences for our props.
Obviously, we were limited by location and budget, but i feel we made the best we could of the situation to allow us to vaguely mimic a prim, middle class dining room.
I am disappointed with the outcome of the camera work however and the reasons for the faults i cannot completely place. The compositions used are heavily influenced by my research and as a result i feel are successful. However at times parts of actors are cut off, which really annoys me. I wasnt aware of this happening at the time but it becomes far more obvious when watching it back. It was difficult at times as we was in a very small space too, so the scenes when they are dancing was a nightmare to fit into shot.
The editing by Dora and Jess is brilliant though. I think it en captures the image we were going for perfectly and the dubbing of sound into the film is very accurate.

HTML Vs Flash

Through my research for my visual essay ive really studied into the dispute between Adobe and Apple. I think the subject is a very interesting one with lots of view points, that might come down to a Harry Hill style "only one way to find out... FIGHT!" scene, but the reality is the outcome could produce a lot of changes for web.

From what i can gather, Apple has shown a dislike for Adobe's monopoly on the web industry due to the web's heavy reliance on Flash, and so have thrown their support behind the development of HTML5. However a lot of high up companies have argued HTML5 simply isnt up to their requirements. HULU have recently upgraded their website and have done so in flash, claiming HTML5 wasnt good enough.

""When it comes to technology, our only guiding principle is to best serve the needs of all of our key customers: our viewers, our content partners who license programs to us, our advertisers, and each other. We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn't yet meet all of our customers' needs. Our player doesn't just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren't necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.
That's not to say these features won't be added to HTML5 in the future (or be easier to implement). Technology is a fast-moving space and we're constantly evaluating which tools will best allow us to fulfill our mission for as many of our customers as possible."

I fear that Apple have simply tried to use their weight to topple a bigger giant and may well have came accross a conker too big.
In theory the adoption of html5 is a good one, itll level the playing field between internet on smart phones and internet on a computer. However, since many argue the shortfalls of html5, perhaps we simply rely on Flash too much. Browsers may not adobt html5 or users might simply refuse, since many users still run on old browsers. It also causes troubles for companies on the web who will have to adopt the changes.
This might simply mean that smartphones will just have to suffer a little longer untill theyre capable of supporting flash fully.
Even now, on my htc desire, which is ran on Android which supports flash, it doesnt fully work. Flash videos yes, but fully flash websites will not run, which doesnt form a problem for websites on the web. But since it is a growing market still, there is plenty of time for phones to catch up before the market itself is fully saturated.
Itll be interesting to see what comes of this..
Visual Essay: Template

The website for my visual essay is now complete and functioning. All key pages are up and i have a template css site made so any further sites can be uploaded in minutes.
I am quite pleased with the outcome, ive taken my time finishing it but i feel its paid off as the outcome is quite neat, clean and simple. It is also the first css website i have written myself and so i am delighted that it all works and has come together nicely.
What this does mean is that i can now upload research from any computer that i am at which i feel is hugely beneficial as i am currently moving between my laptop and pc multiples times a week depending on where i am staying.

I uploaded a screen shot of what it looked like the other day but the visual essay website can be found here or by clicking the flashing .Gif at the top and proceding to the Portfolio section.

Nothing is up there yet but i have been researching in my journal and so it will be a case of now getting everything ive done up on this website and presenting my case for my pathway.

Id love to hear feedback on the website if possible; how it looks, what its like for the user how i could improve it etc, as this project - although in terms of the essay - has a deadline, it is a constant work in progress for me as i am learning as i go.

thanks.

Quiz progress:

As a result of my quiz being set on a topic of Art and Design, i felt its design should follow suit. as a result im looking at poster designers, and their distinctive styles and how i could incorporate them into fitting my quiz, eg how the layout of my quiz will work with the background style.
I was to keep it very basic and so im leaning towards the likes of Russian modernist/constructivist poster designers such as Aleksander Rodchenko.

The simple angular design will compliment the simple layout of a quiz, and so designs such as this are guiding how i design both my background and layout.
As well, simple block colours and use of negative space means a complex yet simple looking design that is similar to early tv graphics. I cant help but look at the arrow shape that protrudes from Lilya Brik's mouth without thinking of the arrows on the opening title of Dad's army!
I shall upload my layout when i have more.

Quiz research:

I found this quiz while researching, it is called "programming language inventor or serial killer?".
It can be found here.
Very simple and very good fun, the quiz reveals pictures of people that are either serial killers or programming greats, it is your task, to decide which you think they might be.
The quiz implements image and sound but no video, though it wouldnt be relevant. But it clearly uses methods that we are being taught in this module such, when selecting an answer it plays out a sound based on what the answer is. If its a murder, a scream plays out, if its a programmer, the sound of a keyboard typing plays. It doesnt save your score but takes note and tells you your score at the end.
The quiz uses an interface/background that remains the same while the the variables that come with each question change such as the picture in the polaroid and the scribbled note paper.
I like the execution (scuse the pun) of this quiz, it is simple but very effective and is a great example of what can be made from what we are doing with this module.

Visual Essay Progress

You are looking at the Layout of my visual essay pages. the only reason it isnt up yet is because the service from the server is down so i cant upload atm - a service i pay for.. *sigh*.
Any how, this isnt an issue as i shall simply proceed offline and have more to upload once it is available.

Im quite pleased with the outcome of the site, i think its something ive perhaps taken far longer in completing than i perhaps should have but i feel its been worthwhile. A lot of internet quizzes like what can be found on facebook, the beeb and The Guardian are quite bland and dull. While TV quizzes and the likes of 1 vs 100 on the Xbox 360 are quite exciting and over the top.

<img src=http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/features/images/stephenfry_qi_gal.jpg">

I think this is because theyre made to be fun, while the quizzes on the bbc site are perhaps more trivial. It may also be to build up hype as prizes etc are involved. But either way far more energy and excitement is made out of these quizzes, even for just the spectator. And i feel this should be replicated in my interactive quiz as an attempt to replicate a more of a game show feel, making it more fun and interactive.

As a result, ive been generating ideas about giving the quiz a name and a logo, and also videoing myself presenting the quiz and asking the questions. I feel this goes more towards making the quiz feel more like a game show/quiz seen on TV or more interactive and realistic like the quizzes on Xbox and Who wants to be a millionaire dvd game.

Ive decided just to call the quiz IQ, for numerous reasons. Firstly due to its connotation or Intelligence quotient, which i felt was apt for the purpose of a quiz. Secondly it is short for Interactive Quiz and finally it is somewhat tongue in cheek as it is the reverse of Qi, a successful quiz/panel show.
As a result i used Qi's logo as a large influence, because i felt it was a successful logo.

I think the imagery of the magnifying glass is clever, as it evokes the feeling of being astute, or observant. Traits that are important with general knowledge or fact based games.
I took this into account when creating my logo. What things should it represent?
Being observant, intelligent? astute? similar types of emotions that are represented by the magnifying glass that are such perfect representations of a quiz.

I felt another good way of representing this was an eye. so i started playing with logos that could use this research.

These are the the two logos i came up with. I felt they were lighthearted in their simple design but had strong connotations with the concept behind them.
It is also quite blatently a rip off of Qi, which i felt was fine, as i wanted my quiz to be quite tongue in cheek.

Interactive Media pathway: Quiz.

Im strangely quite excited and eager with this pathway. While some absolutely loved the 3ds max project and took to it like a duck to water, i struggled; and while some are dreading the flash quiz, i am quite looking forward to it.
Although i am not completely familiar with flash - i, like some were only introduced to it this year - i am eager to give it another shot. I feel now that i am more familiar and with a better understanding of the software, i can do a much better job.

I have decided to base my quiz on Art and Design. From the research i did it was obvious, needless to say, that a quiz needed a topic for which the questions can be based around. I felt that Art and Design was an interesting an broad topic which gives me lots to work with, i could choose to narrow it down to a certain area should i choose, but for now i felt it was a good base.

My intentions are to create an image based quiz, multiple choice where the user chooses the associated image to the question. I may also use text based questions and answer, but my reasons for focussing on an image based quiz is due to its relevence and how appropriate it is to my subject matter.
I could however do two quiz's, with similar questions and answers but one is image based and the other text and see how successful each is.

I am currently formulating my questions and shall post them once complete. I plan to do approximately 15 questions, id like to do more than the minimum but we shall see how that goes.

Chris; - out.

But Dr.. I was in gorgeous Cornwall last week - my safe haven - and was without internet or mobile access, thus my lack of postage.
I've been busy this week, watching more films that would be deemed healthy, entering multiple design competitions and designing a newsletter for a client; along with both my visual essay and my flash project. But all this can wait, as i have forgotten just how much i love Watchmen. It is simply an absolutely stunning film on every level.
Ive began researching my sources for the essay, i want to get the large majority finished before adding it to my site, I also need to create a css layout for my pages that will hold the case for my pathway decision. At the same time me and my brother are working on Actionscript for my upcoming flash project.
Sadly as a result i dont really have any images or videos to show you..
well, i lie, there is one..

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.allwoodmultimedia.com/2010/04/but-dr-i-am-paggliacci.html' title='But Dr.. I will continue to build and add to it as i progress through the task, allowing me to document my own progress as i go.
At present the site is HTML, which i know means that my site will be static, but it will be interactive and allows me to explore the space of a website to host my essay.
I opted for this due to being more comfortable with fireworks than flash, i knew that if i used HTML i could get a site that worked first and allow myself to get my content up. Perhaps afterwards if i have time i will explore further into css and javascript.
I did, admittedly, begin with css and javascript but this only caused problems which i felt i would be better of without for the time being.

This is a screen shot of the site so far, but it can be physically viewed by clicking the animated GIF to the left and proceeding to click the Portfolio link.

Prose for Palates;

As a studying print/broadcast journalist, my girlfriend has created her own blog.
She is using it as an opportunity to reflect and become comfortable with the art of blogging before starting in september on the Journalism course at NTU.
Outside her current course she works for a local paper and so writes regularly.
I've designer the layout for her, which has now encouraged me to redesign mine, it's started to annoy me, i think its a bit too dark and heavy.
Anyway i think that you should keep an eye on her blog, i think itll be exciting and interesting, im looking forward to seeing it develop over the coming months.

Prose for palates

Visual Essay;

"as you know, the premiere loves surprises" (upon the americans finding out about the doomsday device)

This week ive been concentrating on getting my head around the visual essay. I now know what im doing and how to do it and have begun creating its structure.

As i intend to specialise in web, i am creating my essay in Fireworks and Dreamveaver. The end result will be a HTML file that will be both submitted to the NTU dropbox and uploaded to my website. I feel this is a coherent and good way of showing my interest in the subject.

Although i accept the outcome might not be perfect it will show my interest, enthusiasm and knowledge already, but through the project itself will also show where i want to be and how i want to improve.

For my 3 practitioners i want to concentrate on successful local web designers. The reason behind doing this is because i know of local companies that are well established and quite prestigious. Therefore it shows a realistic example of where i could be in the future, while effectively showing successful examples of web practitioners and interactive developers.

As it stands, my 3 practitioners will be the design company Un.Titled, which are a very good web and graphic designers. I know of them through the college i went to before joining NTU. One of their designers used to go to the same college as me and had designed the art and design prospectus for NTU from 2009. The other is Andrew Warwick from Warwicka, a local designer who has been submitted for many awards and worked with many high profile clients. The final is the company called Seismik who have once again been submitted for many awards and worked for many high profile clients, my personal favourite being the website for the small but eccentric shop called Le Chien Et Moi. Other references are Green sheep designer, JDR, Bubble and Kebler.

I can no longer sit back and allow the International Communist Conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

Im watching Dr Strangelove for inspiration for a "secret cabinate / war room" style room room for my secret lair. Ive been working on my designs room-by-room and as a result have arguably spent too much time drawing and planning and not enough time actually making.
When brainstorming ideas for what could be in my lair, ive looked to a wide variety of sources. Rather than just think of super heroes ive tried to look outwards from that.
Good examples in games, cartoons, tv and film and i feel this has strongly influenced me and directed me to create a strong idea of my own secret lair.
In all honesty i dont like revealing my influences because, as childish as it sounds, i dont want people stealing them when ive spent a lot of time looking for the less obvious but coherent sources, and so instead i keep a personal log for all my research that will then go into my presentation at the end.
One idea that did come to me was of a war room. I felt it fit the criteria of my lair - a sinister alter ego of myself - to have a "round table" where all my fellow evil conspirators (..?) could sit. Good examples of this are Austin Powers and as mentioned, Dr strangelove.

I have however since became distracted and found myself watching the entire film, laughing to myself, and quickly finishing this box of wine.

Watch this space.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

I went to see this yesterday evening, it was my girlfriend's recommendation as she had read the first book.
I wasnt entirely sure what to expect, although the trailer and reviews were positive.
The end product was a throughly enjoyable, though relatively long, film that resulted in only having enough time for one pint afterwards before the bars closed.

The first thing i noticed was the beautiful wide angled shots the film used with a low depth of field, which really suited the cold contrast of the film.
The story was thrilling and captivating. It was forgiving for those who hadnt read the book while, according to my girlfriend, was pretty true to the story. She said that areas had been, naturally, trimmed out, but only really to keep the film quite streamlined and no become lead a-stray.

The film was quite dark and gritty and a little disturbing in some sections, though i wouldnt consider this a bad thing. It wasnt there for the sake of moving you or to simply cause shock. It provided sustenance for why the main character, Lisbeth, was like she was.

The girl with the dragon tattoo played out much like the Bourne trilogy, by being full of action, but not over the top of glorified, filled with mystery but not irrational or far-fetched, and the way the two main characters worked together was energetic and lightened the mood of a heavy film.

The way the two main characters played out was interesting, however. Through the name of the film im lead to believe Lisbeth is the main character, though through how the film played out, it was more centred around Mickael Blomkvist. This leads me to be a little confused as to how the next film will play out.

Motherland

I found this collection by Simon Roberts while looking into the art of photojournalism. Something that actually really takes my interest.
I enjoy and do quite a lot of photography in my own time and so i like to look at photographers too.
Simon Roberts wanted to take an objective view of Russia from a westerners point of view. But rather than portray Russia in a negative light, highlighting the collapse of communism, it imposes a more positive outlook, looking at communities and the outlook of people in such a vast country and how cultures changes as you travel.
Simon Roberts is also famous for a contemporary photography project on the English. Which is another clever observation on how England is represented in terms of its photography.

"I was surprised by the lack of contemporary studies that had been made over the past decade. So it seemed like an appropriate opportunity to try and extend this important legacy, to explore themes of identity, memory, history and attachment to place - of belonging."

The website is made in flash so i cannot put any images up, but his website is available here.
Simon Roberts

his photography isnt necesserily iconic, or shot in a spectacular way. but his outlook and what he aims to capture are intelligent and objective. It required us to look at eachothers blogs and see how we note down our development and research.
It was interesting seeing what people put on their blogs. Most listed images and videos theyd seen that had interested them, others also put websites up with stuff useful to them.
I feel that in hindsight i perhaps do not put enough practitioners work up on here, but i do think i reflect upon my progress quite well.
So in future im going to try to make a conscious effort to upload other peoples work to this blog.

the next part of the session was to create 5 questions that would get you to think about your development.
In what way dyu think youve improved?
How confident are you starting a new project?
How have your thoughts towards your practice changed?
How has research affected your development?

We only had 4 in the end as we scrapped our 5th.

I got some interesting responses. for this section i was working with Ulysse.

He told me that he has improved by developing new skills and learning to use new software.
He is confident starting a new project and he looks forward to starting something new and fresh.
His oppinions of the direction he is taking hasnt changed and so his thoughts havnt changed.
For research, he often starts somewhere that he already knows, finding a common ground and then working from their.

And to cap off, so this isnt a post that is purely text, i thought id insert an image of some work i like.

This is the template design to Embrace The Cultures new website. First on the agenda: Vertigo.
With his whole archive to work through i didnt really know where to begin, between us both we knew 4 or 5 of this biggest films and were instantly the attracted to watching these first, the likes of Psycho, 39 steps, the birds and of course, Vertigo.

We absolutely loved every minute of it.
The intricacy of the narrative was fantastic, the unexpected and morbid twists in the plot had us on the edge of our seats from beginning to end.
The composition of his shots were beautiful and often very clever. One particular area worth mentioning was the way he panned out when the main character - who is afraid of heights - looked down, to exaggerate the depths of which he was looking down upon.

Another section worth mentioning was Hitchcocks almost signature dream sequences, where the film became stylized and trippy. For its day this, i assume was pretty cutting edge, but the style in which it was done was fantastic and represented so well the impression of the main character going mad.

We thoroughly enjoyed watching Vertigo and shall continue this event by watching another of his films next monday, which i shall also comment upon.

Signifier/Signified;

In this morning we rounded up the events of the last few weeks, the relevance of the work we'd studied and films we'd watched.
The fundamental link was Focal Periphery.
Events can happen that have no particular relevance but when placed alongside other insignificant events suddenly find meaning.

A Noun, a thing, is a signifier: It is what it is. While the Signified is what it means.
Through connections to other signifiers, they become signified.

A Good example of this is the film we watched last week called Homicide.

Based around the murder of a jewish woman. Events that occur around it suddenly find meaning.

On its own the signifiers - the note that said "grofaz" - are irrelevent. But within the context of the film - the seemingly anti-semitic conspiracy - the note suddenly has meaning.

"Saussure's 'theory of the sign' defined a sign as being made up of the matched pair of signifier and signified."

A better description can be round at Changing Minds.org

Homicide Conspiracy
